Cupertino, California — Apple today previewed iOS 26, a major update that brings a refreshed, elegant design and intelligent experiences, along with numerous enhancements to the apps users rely on daily. The new design infuses the entire system with a more lively and visually appealing experience while retaining the familiar feel of iOS. Updates to the Phone and Messages apps help users stay connected while blocking interruptions like spam calls. iOS 26 also adds new features to CarPlay, Apple Music, Maps, and Wallet, and introduces the all-new Apple Games, a one-stop destination for all of a player’s games.
"iOS 26 features a stunningly refreshed design and delivers substantial upgrades to the functions users rely on daily, making the iPhone more practical," said Craig Federighi, Apple's senior vice president of Software Engineering. "From the Lock Screen and Home Screen to new features in the Phone and Messages apps that help users focus on connections, everything feels more vivid and personalized. Combined with powerful new Apple intelligence features deeply integrated with the system, users can accomplish various tasks more easily."
Beautiful new appearance
The new design makes the app and system experience more lively and pleasing to the eye, while retaining the familiar feel of iOS. It is crafted with Liquid Glass, a brand-new translucent material that can reflect and refract the surrounding environment, further highlighting the content and infusing vitality into elements such as controls, navigation, app icons, and widgets. The new design covers both the Home Screen and Lock Screen, making them more personalized and vivid than ever before. Additionally, Liquid Glass brings new customization options for app icons and widgets, including elegant and minimalist appearances.
On the Lock Screen, the time adjusts smoothly based on the available space of the wallpaper image. The Spatial Scene feature brings the wallpaper to life with a 3D effect, making it appear vivid and almost tangible as users move their iPhone. The updated design elements also bring a fresh experience to apps.
The Camera app has a streamlined layout, helping users focus on the moment they’re capturing. The Photos app has also been updated, presenting Gallery and Featured Collection views through separate tabs.
In Safari, web pages extend from the top edge of the screen to the very bottom, allowing users to see more content while retaining common operations like refreshing and searching.
In the Apple Music and Podcasts apps, the newly designed tab bar floats above the user’s content. It dynamically shrinks to highlight the content as users browse and automatically expands when scrolling upward.
Developers can utilize Liquid Glass materials and components through a set of updated APIs to give their apps the same vibrant, elegant, and visually pleasing appearance.
Features for staying connected and blocking interruptions
One of the cornerstones of the iPhone experience, the Phone app now features an integrated layout that brings favorites, recent calls, and voicemails together in one place. Call screening based on Live Voicemail helps users block interruptions by collecting information from callers and providing users with the details they need to decide whether to answer or ignore the call1. When users encounter a busy line, the Call Hold Assistant can notify them when the online customer service is available to answer2.
In the Messages app, users can now block messages from unknown senders, giving them more control over who appears in their conversation list. Messages from unknown senders will be displayed in a dedicated folder, and users can mark the number as known, learn more information, or delete it. These messages will remain muted until the user chooses to accept them.
CarPlay in-vehicle functionality has been enhanced.
CarPlay provides a smarter, safer way to use iPhone while driving, with more than 600 million daily uses. Now, with the release of iOS 26, CarPlay has been updated to be more beautiful and easier to use than ever before. The elegant design includes a compact incoming call view, allowing users to clearly see who is calling without missing key information such as navigation directions. iOS 26 also brings reply and pin conversation features to CarPlay's Messages app; with the help of widgets and live activities, users can stay updated on the latest information while focusing on driving. These updates also support CarPlay Ultra, combining the best experiences of iPhone and the car to present a deeply integrated, unified experience across all screens in the vehicle.
Apple Music, Maps, and Wallet apps get updates
In the Music app, the lyrics translation feature helps users understand the lyrics of their favorite songs, while the lyrics pronunciation feature allows everyone to sing along with the songs, regardless of language barriers. The Auto Transition feature works like a DJ, intelligently adding transitions between songs to seamlessly move from one track to the next through methods such as delay and beat matching.
In the Maps app, the "Visited Places" feature helps users keep track of locations they have been to. When arriving at places like restaurants or stores, users can allow their iPhone to detect the location and view all visited places in the Maps app. The data of visited places is protected with end-to-end encryption and cannot be accessed by Apple. Additionally, iPhones now use on-device intelligence to better understand users' daily commuting routes, presenting their preferred routes when they are heading home or to work, and notifying them of traffic jams while offering alternative routes.
The updates to the Wallet app make users' daily interactions with the physical world easier. Users can view Live Activities with real-time flight updates that can be shared through the updated boarding passes in the Wallet app. Boarding passes also provide convenient access to traveler-related information, such as navigating to the airport via the Maps app, tracking important items via the Find My app, and reporting lost luggage.
Other features of iOS 26 include:
Apple Games is an all-new app that brings all of a player’s games together in one place. Here, players can easily return to their favorite games, discover exciting new releases, and share more fun with friends. They can find the latest news about all their games, including major events and updates, ensuring they never miss a精彩 moment.
The AirPods 4, AirPods 4 (with Active Noise Cancellation), and AirPods Pro 2 have added several new features, making AirPods more versatile than ever. Leveraging Voice Isolation technology, the studio-grade recording feature helps iPhone, iPad, and Mac users record content with better sound quality and enjoy clearer calls. With the Camera Remote feature, users can simply long-press the stem of their AirPods to take photos or start and stop video recording on their iPhone or iPad.
Parents can more easily create a Child Account for their kids or move them into one, and use a wealth of parental control features to keep children safe. Enhancements to Communication Limits, Communication Safety, and the App Store include the ability for parents to approve their child’s contact requests, blur sensitive content in photos during FaceTime calls and in Shared Albums, and allow parents to make exceptions to let their kids download apps with age ratings that exceed the app content restrictions set by parents.
Safari’s advanced fingerprinting protection now extends by default to all browsing experiences, further protecting user privacy.
Powerful accessibility features include Accessibility Reader, which provides a customized system-wide reading experience, and Braille Access, which offers a new interface for iPhone devices connected to braille displays. Updates to features such as Live Listen, Background Sounds, and Personal Voice take the accessibility experience across the entire Apple ecosystem to the next level.
